Have I mentioned to you
that my daughter, too,
wrestled while
in high school?
I hold strong opinions,
most of them negative,
about sports with high rates
of physical injury. (Such
a small American audience
gathers to hear my rant.
Oh, poor Buddy Boy!)
Like you, I, too, disliked the
tedium of tournaments, but,
as with most miserable
experiences, I discovered
some good things in
wrestling season.
Listing the merits of mayhem
in my mind, though, these
several years later,
I am not so entirely certain
that any of those good things
has had an enduring worth
greater than, say,
a wad of chewing gum
abandoned
on the underside
of a bleacher plank.
