FROM JERUSALEM TO JERICHO

When I mentioned one of my ideas that might brighten the life of someone who resides three doors distant from me in my little Wisconsin town, my friend Ernie offered advice. “I wouldn’t do that, Dave.”

“No, Ernie,” I said, “I don’t suppose you would. But I might.”

Ernie asked, “Would you be doing this, in part, in hopes of winning favor with this woman’s daughter?”

“Oh, probably so. Sure, of course,” I agreed. “If it worked out and Jackie was grateful, that would be nice. But I’d be doing it, too, because it’s the right thing to do. It’s straight out of the story where Jesus was saying, ‘Which of these do you think was neighbor to the man?’ And this lady is three damn doors away!”

“Well,” Ernie allowed, “I remember one of our professors told us, ‘Never let imperfect motivation prevent you from performing a good deed.’”

“Mm-hmm. I like that. I’ll keep you posted.”
