AN EXPRESSION OF PERSONAL LOSS

When, in 1990, I had just begun to read the novel Rabbit at Rest, a friend of mine casually gave away the title’s meaning before I had guessed it. I was moved to tears. I calculate that I have now, at age fifty-nine, lived more years than the fictional Harry Angstrom. It seems such a shame today, as it did then, that he left this earth before I was prepared to let him go. ♦
