AN ARROW ESCAPE

Old friend, I must boast:
I have eluded Cupid
once again!

Another hunting season
came and went,
but the bare-assed archer
failed to make a dent
in my tough old hide!

I have eluded Cupid
once again.

Oh, I felt the terror
when Cupid’s dart
whooshed near,
but it missed my heart.
Love passed me by.

I have eluded Cupid
once again.

I’ve seen his victims’
faces blank as snow,
fools grinning, giggling,
’cause they don’t quite know
what hit ’em.

But I, I am pleased to say,
eluded Cupid
this Valentine’s Day.

With me poor Cupid always fails.
(Except once. Long ago, in that dark year
when the arrow pierced me
and you were near,
and you caught me as I fell.)
