BREAKFAST WITH NICK

Did you save the little version or the larger one?

Your breakfast sounds lovely. All except for the Rachael Ray part, which you didn't mention.

Nick came and went. He hadn't told his folks he was visiting, and when he called from my house, he found out his uncle from Mississippi was in the Dells. So he'll come back Thurs. and stay overnight. I made a birthday card with today's PoD for Nick to sign for Mom. Nick stayed for breakfast—toast with strawberry jam, coffee with sugar and milk (Debbie and I had, in addition, eggs from an Amish farm). Dad came in, to borrow a video called Moving Midway, but Nick had brought Pulp Fiction and Gran Torino, so we sent Dad home with all three. Nick was supposed to grill a salmon tonight (from Rick, now from Dad's freezer), but we'll move that supper to Thursday and hope we don't have a hard rain (predicted). Dad will bring back the Netflix video before the post office closes this afternoon, and we'll probably have supper of chicken strips on green salad, dinner rolls, and lemon meringue pie. Nick brought a German Riesling, which is one of my favorite wines (Chardonnay is another; Jessie's Red Mountain Dollar-Forty-Nine-a-Gallon Vin Rosé has good nostalgia value but, paradoxically, an unpleasant aftertaste). I asked Nick to take a loaf of my banana bread to his folks. He has an electronic thing that holds 720 songs, and he can blast one song at a time from his stereo speakers while his Harley, with modified (amplified) exhaust pipes, is idling in my driveway and Nick is finishing off a Marlboro before he heads out for the Dells. I enjoy having my neighbors know that Nick is in town. When I declined Nick's invitation to take us all to the Empire Café for breakfast, Debbie thought it was because Nick embarrasses me, but that wasn't it, exactly. It was just that the menu downtown offers a more plenteous array of choices than the menu at my house; I probably would have had to write a much longer paragraph here, my dear Jessie, replying to your question, "What are you having for breakfast?"

Love, Dave
