David Fischer, a year out of high school, took
Cheryl Romano, soon to be a senior, on their
one real date, in 1968. They saw The Fox,
or some of it, on a summer night at the 51/16
Drive-In Theater, south of Ninian, Wisconsin.
For the next year, Dave and Cheryl exchanged letters,
and, in December of 1969, in a restaurant in Nebraska,
they had supper together. But the evening ended earlier
than Dave would have wished, and not a word passed
between the two for nearly forty years. So it often goes.
In 2009 a coincidence of circumstance put the two back in
touch. They spoke eagerly and cheerfully on the phone,
swapping stories of family, work, and avocations. Cheryl,
recounting a profitable real estate transaction, boasted,
I made out like a bandit! to which Dave replied with a
whispered growl. Mmm-hmm, he said, I have never
forgotten how you made out. And I always hated that
you wore that stupid bandana across your mouth!
