ASTONISHING OCCURRENCES

On the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange, traders shouted or watched open-mouthed as the screens lighted up with plummeting prices and as phones rang off the hook. “It was almost like ‘The Twilight Zone,’ ” said Theodore R. Aronson of Aronson, Johnson & Ortiz, a money management firm in Philadelphia.

The New York Times, May 6, 2010

Reading those published sentences, investor David C. Fischer, age 60, of Fjord, Wisconsin, yawned open-mouthed and then drily remarked, “Y’know, I can remember a time, back in the days of ‘The Twilight Zone,’ when phones would reliably stop ringing as soon as they were off the hook. But now? Has this guy Aronson never seen or heard a cordless phone?”
