CLINGING TO TRUTH

A woman once embraced me
to say hello or
possibly to say goodbye.
I patiently accepted her warmth
but I told her
“I fear your hug is a lie.”

The woman wrinkled her brow
and held me close
and lingered before replying:
“A formality perhaps. But
can a lie be a lie
if you know the liar is lying?”

I wrinkled my brow and
unbuttoned her blouse and paused
before helplessly shrugging:
“Who knows what is false?
Who knows who is true?
I know very, very little about hugging.”
