A NEW DAYS RESOLUTION
Tuesday, October 26, 2010
My dear Debbie, Deborah Ann. Most old mistakes I cannot undo—possibly Ill reduce my belly size—but I can resolve to err in fresher, more interesting ways and repeat my old mistakes less frequently.
Further, I hereby declare my good intention of LISTENING religiously to The Writers Almanac AND simultaneously reading it. Mr. Keillor delighted me today when he read the Punishment poem while I followed along on my own computer screen. Gary Leisings poem put me in mind of you, my coffee-drinking friend, who seldom speaks of Heaven or Hell.
This morning as I write, a big wind bellows and whines outside my stone-walled dwelling. Rain and wind-whipped maple leaves sing along. Windows rattle in their frames.
Before breakfast, during a lull in the storm, I went for a walk. Not far. I went only up to where the old Fjord High School stood, and then downtown, for my mail. When I got back, I made coffee (I had not yet read the poem) and forgot to do my sit-ups. Please excuse me. I shall go and do them now.
Here, below, is the poem I liked. Perhaps you have already seen and heard it, but I thank you, Deb, for giving me and Mr. Keillor, and of course Mr. Leising, five minutes of your time. (Five minutes, yes, five minutes of daily devotion is what I vow!) And I thank you, also, for the two minutes more that you might have spent in reading this gushy blurb.
Love, Dave
