A STILL LIFE SET IN MOTION

Subject: From The Writer's Almanac, Monday, Nov. 15

It's the birthday of Georgia O'Keeffe, born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin (1887), who was an unknown 29-year-old art teacher when a series of her charcoal drawings wound up in the hands of the photographer and art promoter Alfred Stieglitz, and he put the drawings in his art gallery on Fifth Avenue in New York City without even asking her. At first, she was angry that her work had been exhibited without her permission, but the drawings made her famous, the first American woman to be taken seriously by the art world.

She eventually met Stieglitz; they hit it off and got married. O'Keeffe eventually became even more famous for her paintings of flowers, but when asked why she chose flowers as her subject, she said, "Because they're cheaper than models and they don't move."

Hmmm. What exactly would you consider exactly a personal e-mail? I may someday send you one. For now I would like to assure you, my dear, darling Angie, that you personally are the only person in the whole wide world to whom I personally sent the Georgia O'Keeffe item and the only adult person of my acquaintance with whom I ever spent a pleasurable hour of a summer's afternoon in the great city of Washington in line outside a gallery specially exhibiting Ms. O'Keeffe's paintings.

Ever wonder why I photograph flowers? Because they remind me, in ways, of my models. And flowers don't complain that I'm not getting personal enough with them.

You caused me to chuckle, sweet Angie, when you scolded me for impersonalness but allowed your computer to append the signature "Angelina J. Langermann."

Affectionately yours,
David C. Fischer
