PERFECTLY PLEASED
On Sunday, April 10, 2011, at 9:42AM, David C. Fischer sent an e-mail to ten or eleven Undisclosed Recipients, including his friend Audrey Reiter.
Subject: Sidney Lumet 1924-2011.
I recommend this 14-minute New York Times interview (including lots of clips) with the director of 12 Angry Men, Fail-Safe, The Pawnbroker, Dog Day Afternoon, Network, and sixty-some other films.
DCF
Working at his desk shortly before 3:00PM, Fischer heard a chime indicating inbound mail. He had received a four-word reply from Ms. Reiter:
And my favorite - Tootsie.
Fischer immediately replied to Reiters reply:
You are so smart! But please don't call me Tootsie.
Love, Dave
About a quarter-hour later, Fischer sent a follow-up message to Reiter:
I am sorry, dear Audrey, to question the reliability of your memory (five-years-more-experienced-than-mine), but I fact-checked your Tootsie, and I found that maybe Tootsie was directed by the Polish Sydney or the Jackson Sydney.
Love, Dave
Later in the day, Reiter wrote again. Just one seemingly apologetic word:
(T)oopsie!
Only one minute passed, however, before Reiter sent fourteen words more:
I AM smart. "Made you look, made you try, made you look up Tootsie-pie."
Fischer was perfectly pleased that his female friend should have the last word.
