WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN
On Sunday, the twenty-fifth day of July, 1971, David C. Fischer, at the age of twenty-two, declared to his teenaged bride, Before God and these people, I promise to love you, Vivian, and to live with you in Christ, forever and ever.
Forty years later, the groom and the bride are still living, but the marriage itself survived, by Fischers reckoning, no more than thirty-one years and two weeks. The vow, having much in common with other religious promises, had left Fischer with a fair amount of wiggle room. As to whether wiggling doomed the union, David Fischer is far from certain.
