SECRET SANTA

I

n December a year ago, David C. Fischer, of Fjord, Wisconsin, received in the mail a small package, locally postmarked and bearing a handwritten return address of just one word, “Santa.” The gift inside was something Fischer had thought of purchasing for himself. He knew its precise monetary value: ten dollars, no tax.

Pleased and puzzled, Fischer asked a half-dozen Fjord residents over the next few weeks and months whether they had given the gift. He received plausible denials from them all. Then, somewhere around September, Fischer thought of one more possibility, someone he did not dare to ask.

Some names in this religious allegory have been changed. The story is otherwise approximately 100% historically accurate and approximately 95% complete. Perhaps you, kind reader, will assist in completing it.
