Fischer expected the first envelope to be marked with the date of the first Sunday of the year; it was instead imprinted as follows: Initial Offering Our envelope system is imperative to our church sup- port program and the recording of your offerings. Your contribution will help defray this expense. Thank you.       Fischer shook his head in dismay. The request that he “help defray” this particular expense put him in mind of something he had occasionally heard in high school, back in the sixties, when one kid would bum a cigarette from another.       “Hey, man, can you spare a smoke?”       “Yeah, sure.”       “Thanks, man. Got a light?”       “Yeah, sure. Anything else?
