MISSING THE BOAT
Helping a high school friend and his dad milk cows during spring break in 1964, I noticed one husky, hairy forearm of the Fjord farmer father was decorated with an anchor and a somewhat smudged U.S. Navy. I remarked upon it to my pal, who explained that his dad, not yet out of high school during the Second World War, had taken the train to Milwaukee to stay one night in a hotel and then present himself at the military induction center. He got good and drunk the night before (Im quoting the now-famous words of Arlo Guthrie; do you know the reference?) and woke the next morning with the artwork on his arm. A few hours later, however, a government physician put a stethoscope to the young mans chest and declared him not qualified to enlist. My friend said his dad, like many men his age, didnt much care to talk about the war. ♦
