All Rights Reserved.   Garden Cart, 2012 © 2012 by Bud Grossmann ONE STEP FORWARD, TWO STEPS BACK       On a drizzly Thursday in October, writer David Fischer was about to set out from his home in the village of Fjord, Wisconsin, to return a garden cart he had mistakenly stolen from someone’s curb while on his healthful walk the previous afternoon. Before surrendering it to its owners, however, Fischer planned to photograph the cart so that, if he were put on trial, he could urge the jurors to maintain the same reasonable doubt that he claims to have held, as to whether the vehicle was trash or something of continuing functional value.        That much of the story Fischer furnished on Friday to a friend. In case his fan base, however, were to demand a prequel, Fischer held in reserve facts related to his discovery that the well-worn cart had not yet in fact been retired from service.        Aware that trilogies often come in sets of three, Fischer also outlined a prequel to the prequel. He believed his dramatic and daring daylight misappropriation of the two-wheel wagon would make a fine start or finish.        Fischer hopes to tell the entire story before he dies.
