SERIOUSLY
My little brother, living in Florida, mailed me what must be a yard-sale T-shirt bearing the boast
SARCASM
JUST ONE OF MY
MANY TALENTS.
By way of a thank-you, I made and mailed a photo of myself wearing the shirt. I wrote across the picture, “Wow! Larry, I love it! This shirt fits me to a T!”
Actually, the shirt, size medium, is too tight. And, actually, I am reluctant to publicly proclaim any of my several talents. I do not in fact love the shirt, and I am not sure whether I’m any good at sarcasm. What do you suppose would be a good measure of my success? That people realize I’m speaking sarcastically, or that they do not?
If I find out that Larry thought I was serious, I will consider wearing a shirt that says
EXPRESSING GRATITUDE
JUST ONE OF MY MANY
CONSPICUOUS HUMILITIES.
