Subject: a gloomy morning

boy oh boy, it sure looks like we are in for more rain!

I'm all packed up and ready for my big move up Hwy 18 to Wallace Rd. They have real TV - with an antenna. It's like being in a hotel. Ray showed me the breaker boxes and Max got me connected with the internet. Strawberries and cherries are ripe. What more do I need??? Harold and I are going to have a great time.

Fjord was on WPR this morning when the weekend weather was mentioned.

Love, D

Subject: Monday Late Start.

Grandma Fischer was born 112 years ago today.

I had a leisurely conv. with Dad this morning and then forgot to do my howdy rounds. I saw Joyce Carol Oates's byline on a TNY short story (e-mail), which reminded me of a Eudora Welty short story, which led to an NPR article, which led to an article about my great-aunt Jeannette Sleever earning her college degree at the age of 95 in the year 2001, which led to my slapping my forehead and crying out, "Debbie! I have once again forgotten my beloved Deborah Ann!"

Slapping my forehead led to my wondering whether I've told you about Tom Girodet's forehead injury?

A few days ago, Tom found a real good deal on a Trek bike on Craigslist, in Madison. He bought it, brought it home, and parked it on its kickstand in the driveway. He needed to adjust the shifters. Tom approached the bicycle from the right side, reached over to grip the left side of the frame at the rear and the fork, and when he flipped the bike seat-side-down, the extended kickstand gouged a little ditch dead center down Tom's forehead.

"Just a scratch," Tom told me, when I first saw his bindi the next day. But it was a scratch, I thought, worth a photograph. I asked him to demonstrate how he'd been wounded, and Tom did so without drawing blood a second time, which is good, though of course it made for a less interesting picture.

Harold is Ray and Maxine's cat, right? Not a strawberry- and cherry-picking human male companion? Don't break my heart.

Bye for now.
Love, Dave
