Id like to be remembered ...
Could you profitably spend an
hour completing that sentence?
As for myself, I seriously suspect
that when I have drawn my last breath
I will be remembered no more enduringly
than Charles Dudley Warner,
a person of commendable accomplishment
(greater by far than my own!)
who evidently is best remembered
for publishing a certain epigram and then
ever after having his remark attributed
to a writer far better remembered
than Charles Dudley Warner himself.
Indeed, I would like to be remembered.
Sweeter, though, than my hope
of leaving a lasting legacy are
some of this lifes ephemeral pleasures,
one example of which now comes to mind,
a breakfast bowl of really rich vanilla ice cream,
crowned with a certain buttery, bourbony
chocolate sauce, the source of whose
recipe I have fondly not forgotten.
