NO USE CRYING

Last night, while Celeste was downtown counting ballots, I somehow knocked over a bigger-than-a-pint red plastic water glass that she had abandoned at lunchtime atop the inch-thick maple cutting board on our dining room table. As an optimist, I calculate the vessel was half full until the moment when I made it entirely empty, splashing its contents across Celestes array of tax papers, a used-once table cloth, and two dining room chairs. Good thing I havent gotten around to hauling the living room couch to the curb (to make room beside the fireplace for Celestes spinet piano, which is still at her old house, presumably silent) because the couch and the ancient quilt on top of it performed excellently in drying damp documents overnight. One packet of papers, the most valuable of all, and directly in the path of the flood, miraculously suffered no damage because they were in a plastic sleeve marked Papers for Tax Preparer. A dozen other envelopes and stacks of statements, however, were thoroughly soaked. Celestes 2014 check register suffered a direct hit, but I cooked it for an hour beneath a bright table lamp and then flattened it overnight with the American Heritage Dictionary 5th Edition, thus reassuring myself that the Internet has not yet made one of my favorite big books obsolete. ♦
