In maybe April, or early May, Carol and I began amusing ourselves by telling friends, relatives, and random acquaintances, whenever we could work it into a conversation, “We are looking forward to enjoying our seventies together.” Beginning on the fourth of June, when I turned seventy, Carol and I, at every opportunity, told whoever we might have missed in the course of our earlier silliness, “We are enjoying our seventies together.” This joke will expire tomorrow, the first day of July. We are confident, however, that we can get some more mileage out of a somewhat unusual circumstance by remarking to whoever has not yet heard our jest, “We sure enjoyed our seventies together,” and thus continue to give nice people a chance to stare us in the eye (or four of them) and claim that we do not look our respective ages. I hope and expect, in ten years’ time, Carol and I will still be making ourselves chuckle on a daily basis with all the wit of a third-grader.
