Today I speak out in praise of the brave and barefaced Americans who have, in recent days, congregated at State Capitols to mock the virus that has rendered so many other persons docile and diffident. The protestors are demanding, as I understand them, an immediate easing of social distancing restrictions and a speedy reopening of the U.S. economy. Hooray! Bravo! Brilliant! I intend to applaud ever louder in the coming weeks, when, as seems likely, some of these audacious defenders of freedom develop symptoms of COVID-19, but, on principle, wave aside all offers of help, whether it be medical or otherwise.
