I believe I last recited The Apostles’ Creed on Wednesday, December 9, 2020.
I believe that I, prior to that date, recited it, without looking at the page of a hymnal or an order of worship, hundreds or even thousands of times, no problem, and that I could do it again, right now, word for word, exactly as it is printed in my own copy of Luther’s Small Catechism.
I believe my wife, who was kind enough to put on her reading glasses at my request and follow along in the Small Catechism as I attempted to recite The Creed.
I did not succeed, my wife, alas, decreed.
I believe W.C. Fields might well have said or pretty much said what several credible people have said he said, “A man’s got to believe in something, and I believe I will have another drink.”
