About ten months and four thousand miles ago, Carol and I purchased a new Toyota RAV4, Blueprint blue, with so many bells and whistles that I have not yet mustered the courage to read any part of the two pounds and two ounces of owner’s manuals that came with it. In particular, I have not read the instructions for the “Premium Audio with 8-inch Touchscreen and 11 JBL Spkrs incl Subwoofer & Amplifier and SiriusXM w/ 3-Month All Access Trial,” as itemized on the new-car window sticker, and I have not, until a couple of days ago, looked at any of the SiriusXM offers that have arrived in the mail every few weeks since the expiration of the trial. Now I have learned we have been missing out on 325 SiriusXM channels. (“Save $156 For A Full Year / 12 MONTHS for $5 a month 72% OFF - See Offer Details below.”) That’s okay, I think we’ll pass.
I have figured out, by fiddling with the Seek and Track buttons adjacent to the touchscreen, how to find Wisconsin Public Radio and The Ideas Network, and I once went all the way out along the FM dial to WOLX, which, alas, seems not to be playing anymore the oldies I was used to hearing there. Newer oldies are what they have now, far as I can tell. But I gave the volume knob a good twist, and, boy, those eleven speakers do, for sure, sound terrific!
We don’t really need a lot of radio at the moment. Doctors, groceries, town to farm and back to town again, that’s pretty much all the traveling we do these days. And on those occasions when we venture as far as Madison and find that our three known stations do not meet our needs, I merely ask Carol to sing for me. She seldom turns me down.
