Good morning!
“Minus eight, feels like minus twenty-three,” Celeste announced a little while ago, on this bright, sunny Wisconsin winter day, and I thought I should write it down, which I now have done.
I would sort of like to go outside to throw hot coffee into the cold air today to translate those numbers into practical terms. If only I had ever figured out how to take videos with my phone while slinging coffee at the same time.

Good morning!
And what a beautiful morning indeed in Galloway County, Wisconsin! Cold and clear and bright.
I have been up, but now I am back in bed.
My wife, too, has been up, and has had her coffee, but she is here again beside me.
Reading her phone, Celeste cheerily said, “It’s thirteen degrees and feels like zero!”
“Wonderful!” I replied.
I hope to take a walk to the post office late this morning, to mail an overdue sympathy note before it gets any overdue-er. Oh, and I should send some birthday cards, should I not? Maybe Monday. Please remind me.
While I was up, I reassembled my mittens within mittens within mittens (wool, wool, heavy rough cowhide). I had disassembled them and set them out to dry on a towel in the mudroom after getting them damp with sweat when I shoveled deep snow in sub-zero temperatures several weeks ago. No frostbite, knock on wood.
Past nine now, and certainly past the time to get out of bed again and have a breakfast of Danishes and oranges (as Leonard Cohen used to sing), and I am wondering what I will write in that overdue sympathy note that I mean to carry, with mittened hands, the two city blocks from this warm house to the cold, blue mail drop outside the U.S. Post Office in beautiful downtown Fjord, Wisconsin.
